The following sites provide free courses on a variety of subjects. Some of these sites are are free using your Newark Public Library card, some are free at all times, and some have a limited free trial period.

 

Free Courses Available Using Your Library Card

The Great Courses

There are over 6,000 videos in The Great Courses, on topics ranging from history, to money management, to learning how to draw. To access this site, you will need to set up an account for Kanopy, a film streaming site that is also free to Newark Public Library cardholders. LearningExpress Library

Offers interactive practice exams, including ASVAB, GED, GMAT, PRAXIS, SAT, police and firefighter tests, and more.

 

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning provides courses for professional development related to a variety of fields, such as business, creativity, technology. Certificates are available as well as continuing education credits.

 

Courses that Are Free All the Time 

Alison

Alison is one of the world’s largest free learning platforms for education and skills training. It is a for-profit social enterprise dedicated to making it possible for anyone, to study anything, anywhere, at any time, for free online, at any subject level. Users can purchase certificates upon successful completion of a course. 

 

Codecademy

Codecademy is a program offered by Google that teaches users various computer coding languages, like HTML, CSS, C++, SQL, and JavaScript.

 

Coursera

Coursera specializes in classes related to technology. A large portion of the classes are free, and for paying users, there are options to pursue certificates and university degrees.

 

edX

Founded by Harvard and MIT, edX is home to more than 20 million learners, the majority of top-ranked universities in the world and industry-leading companies. Many of the classes are free and self-paced, but users who want a certificate verifying their completion of a course must pay a fee. 

 

Khan Academy

Khan Academy advertises "A world class education for anyone, anywhere. 100% free." Most courses and resources on this site are for students in grades K-12, but there are also some resources intended for college students. 

 

Open Culture

Open Culture provides free access to over 1,500 classes from top universities around the United States.

 

OpenLearn

Produced by The Open University, a world leader in open and distance learning, all OpenLearn courses are free to study. There are nearly 1000 free courses across 8 different subject areas: health, sports & psychology; education & development; history & the arts; languages; money & business; nature & environment; science, mathematics & technology; society, politics & law.

 

Skillshare Basic

Offers videos in four categories: Creative, Business, Technology, and Lifestyle. There are around 2,100 free classes total with videos and tutorials. Having a free account allows you to connect with other students and access the mobile app.

 

ToneSavvy

This site allows users to learn foundational skills in Western music theory, specifically reading notes, ear training, interval training, rhythm, and more.

 

YouTube

There are millions of tutorial videos on YouTube that range in subject from languages, to woodworking, to mathematics, and more.

 

Courses with a Free Trial

For each of these services, please note that you will need a valid credit or debit card, even if you are only using the service for the extent of the free trial. Be sure to check the date that the trial ends so that you don't get charged if you only wanted the free trial.

 

Codecademy Pro

As of the time of writing (April 9, 2020), there is a 7-day free trial for Codecademy Pro. Codecademy Pro includes all of the courses from Codecademy basic, as well as more in-depth and advanced tutorials.

 

CreativeBug

As of the time of writing (April 9, 2020), there is a 7-day free trial for Creativebug. Creativebug has self-paced, online classes where you can learn different arts and crafts skills. Whether you are just beginning or advanced, a hobbyist or a professional artist, there is a lot to learn here.

 

Skillshare Premium

As of the time of writing (April 9, 2020), there is a two-month free trial for Skillshare Premium. Like Skillshare Basic, Skillshare premium offers courses in four categories: Creative, Business, Technology, and Lifestyle. However, with Skillshare Premium, you will have unlimited access to over 26,000 online courses.
