The Newark Public Library is a Congressionally designated depository for U.S. Government documents.  Public access to the government documents collection, including online content, is guaranteed by public law for all users.

The various agencies of the federal government maintain hundreds of Web sites. Fortunately, many tools have been created by the government and by librarians to help you find the information you need.

• USAgov is the official federal government Web portal and has its own search engine.
• The Browse Topics page allows you browse government information sites using a list of about 160 popular topics.
• The GPO online bookstore allows you to search for publications that are available for sale.
• Catalog of U.S. Government Publications contains bibliographic and location information for government documents published since 1994 can be searched.
• New Electronic Titles page links to electronic titles released each week. 
• USASearch.gov allows you to do a keyword search of information gathered from over 1300 federal Internet servers.

• The DocLaw Agency Index from the Washburn University School of Law links not only to agencies' home pages, but also directly to their pages for publications, organizational charts, forms, opinions, manuals and directories.
• The Federal Web Locator at Auburn University is an exhaustive index of federal Web sites organized by agency. 
• GovSpot is a nicely arranged commercial portal.
• Thomas is a user-friendly site for information about Congress and legislation. Thomas is maintained by the Library of Congress.
• The University of Louisville has a handy list of the Government periodicals available on the Internet.
• Some older documents are also being made available on the Internet.
• Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids contains basic facts about the U.S. and the Government, and links to federal agency web pages for children.
